The Paper Machine Shift Supervisor provides direct supervision and leadership to the crew assigned to the paper machines in order to achieve expected results.  This position supervises approximately 15-25 employees.



  • Manage assigned hourly employees.
  • Provide supervision to the assigned crew members in areas of safety, quality, production, cost and production management.
  • Receive direct supervision from the Paper Machine Superintendent in areas such as major production interruptions, planning and coordination of Maintenance Department and operational functions and for other assignments as needed.
  • Provide input to the Paper Machine Superintendents on operational issues, maintenance needs and clothing requirements.
  • Coordinate interaction of the Paper Mill with all other departments.
  • Coordinate scheduling and payroll matters with employees and the Human Resources (HR) Department.
  • Provide on-the-job training, completes Job Hazard Analyses forms and notifies HR and Safety of completion.
  • Participate as the Paper Machine representative on the Weekend Duty Team on a frequency set by the established schedule.
  • Properly report emergent situations, including environmental incidents, and respond as needed.  May be required to spread absorbent pads and recover for disposal.  May be called upon to fight incipient fires (moderate to low heat and smoke) with fire extinguishers and 1½” fire hose.  Response will be within training and awareness level that is based upon departmental duties, emergency and environmental standard operating procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Manage the paper quality and production to meet or exceed the established goals for safety, quality and production.
  • Effectively train, mentor and coach employees.
  • Training period for this position is a minimum of six (6) months.



  • Work schedule is rotating 12-hour shifts.  Two day shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. then two night shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. followed by four (4) days off.  Actual hours of work are the number of hours needed to complete the work as needed.
  • May be required to work off-shift hours with little to no notice and without additional compensation.
  • Exposure to outdoor elements when traveling on foot between facilities.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Requires onsite presence.



  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus ten (10) or more years paper machine manufacturing experience OR a Bachelor’s degree in a technical field plus two (2) years of paper machine supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanical processes and overall paper production operations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and basic computer literacy.
  • Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work well independently and in groups.
  • Strong leadership skills.
