The Role:
Moderna is seeking epidemiologists to support development of the epidemiologic strategy and execute activities to support the vaccine portfolio across Infectious Diseases.
The candidate will join a dynamic and growing team of epidemiologists at the forefront of mRNA vaccine development and will be focused on one of the following programs: RSV, Influenza, COVID-19, or Early-Stage Vaccines (and will subsequently be aligned to the respective Senior Director or Director in Epidemiology).
The successful candidate is driven, curious, collaborative, with a bold ambition to contribute to the development of ground-breaking mRNA-based vaccines. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and a collaborative mindset. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment is essential.
A PhD in epidemiology is preferred, equivalent experience will be considered. Industry experience within drug or vaccine development, or infectious disease, is highly preferred.
The position can be based at one of several Moderna sites: Cambridge, MA (headquarters); Bethesda, MD; Atlanta, GA; Princeton, NJ.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Contribute to the development and execution of the Epidemiology strategy for vaccines within Infectious Diseases.
Provide epidemiologic input to the product development, pre-clinical, safety, and regulatory affairs teams, and contribute to the integrated evidence plans.
Design or contribute to the execution of pre- and post-marketing epidemiology plans and observational studies, including prospective and retrospective burden of disease studies, literature reviews and gap analyses, mathematical modeling, and post-marketing effectiveness studies, as needed.
Assist in the scientific direction of studies and develop protocols, study reports and peer-reviewed publications.
Actively contribute to the development of Target Product Profiles, particularly in terms of demonstrating burden of disease/unmet medical need and shaping post-licensure plans.
Serve as a key partner with Medical Affairs and Commercial in terms of market-building activities, including building of health economic models.
Contribute to the epidemiology strategy for Advisory Board meetings.
Lead or contribute to the epidemiology content for regulatory plans and documents.
Develop collaborations with external experts and investigators to facilitate epidemiologic data generation activities.
Provide epidemiologic support across the Moderna infectious disease epidemiology platforms as needed such as other respiratory programs, latent viruses and global health.
Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with the broader Moderna organization.
Contribute to epidemiologic knowledge in the external environment via abstracts manuscripts, and presentations at academic conferences.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
MSc or PhD in Epidemiology (or similar) preferred, equivalent experience will be considered.
Preference given to candidates with previous experience in vaccine and/or drug development, or infectious disease epidemiology.
Experience with the following is beneficial but not essential:
Respiratory pathogen surveillance data, especially in APAC, EU, and Latin American countries
Epidemiologic analyses of vulnerable populations, including those with immunocompromising conditions and comorbidities such as asthma, CHF, COPD.
Familiarity with the principles of immunology.
Knowledge of multiple respiratory pathogens, including but not limited to RSV, influenza, COVID-19, and/or other respiratory pathogens.
Knowledge of international databases and healthcare systems.
Experience implementing cohort studies, case-control studies, and analyzing time-to-event data.
Background in maternal, pediatric, and/or geriatric epidemiology as they relate to infectious disease or vaccine epidemiology.
Creative problem-solver with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Attention to detail, internal drive to generate high-quality work, and sense of passion and urgency to achieve team and program goals.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills.
Strong interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to work closely with CROs, investigators, consultants, and Moderna team members across functions in a matrix environment.
Exceptional written and oral communication skills to meet the needs of varied audiences.
