Summary:

Founded by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan, Scaled Composites is a 40-year-old aerospace company continually working to push boundaries, prove out ideas, and influence the future. We are a rapid prototyping and manufacturing facility, designing, building, and testing proof-of-concept and prototype vehicles. We have flown an average of one new aircraft type per year over our 40-year history such as Proteus, GlobalFlyer, SpaceShipOne, Model 401, and Stratolaunch.

 

An Avionics Systems Lead Engineer manages project-level technical performance of a program’s avionics systems engineering team, satisfying the allocated technical, cost, and schedule requirements. This individual ensures that the team is adhering to sound engineering processes in the development, modification, and test of mechanical sub-systems on an experimental composite aircraft. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Managing a team of electrical and computer engineers for the design and execution of an aircraft’s avionics architecture 
  • Broad architecture, and component-level design of a variety of aerospace avionics components. To include: integration of off-the-shelf and supplier sub-contract driven EFIS and MFD systems; integration of off-the-shelf and supplier sub-contract driven radios, GPS, INS, navigation, and radio systems; system-level engineering design of flight test data-acquisition and recording systems; system-level engineering design of aircraft telemetry systems; the design and manufacture of vehicle management computers and board-level controllers for the purposes of coordinating communication across a large number of components with different communication protocols
  • Maintaining technical authority for all aircraft avionics components – this will include a number of software-level and hardware board-level design efforts, as well as global architecture level authority of a complicated network of avionics components
  • Technical authority and execution responsibility for aircraft simulation systems, and aircraft flight test control room(s)
  • Assuring appropriate configuration control and documentation of the avionics configuration, and component-level design
  • Working with system safety engineering and project technical management to track and execute the appropriate level of component and system-level ver/val
  • Managing the performance of the greater avionics team, and key sub-contracts
  • Assisting the Program Business Manager with tracking the status of the global avionics system – both cost and schedule 
  • Briefing project management and the customer on the status of the avionics system
  • Delivering appropriate technical solutions on budgeted cost and schedule 
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers on the project 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Strong leadership, problem solving, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Demonstrated past performance in software-engineering tasks in aerospace applications
  • Demonstrated past performance in electrical-engineering tasks in aerospace applications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of aircraft avionics selection, design, construction, and test 
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience designing and/or managing multiple aircraft avionics components
  • Strong ability to work effectively with, and balance the requirements of, the customer, engineers, pilots, shop, and management
  • Ability to represent the company with the customer through direct communication 
  • Experience and understanding of various tools and techniques associated with cost/schedule management 
  • Experience leading efforts through the entire engineering life cycle 
  • Bachelor of Science in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution or substantial equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 10 years of directly related work experience 
  • A minimum of 3 years of leading/managing in an engineering development environment 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with large transport aircraft, or FAA Part 25 aircraft design criteria
  • Microcontroller or embedded processor programming experience
  • Experience with Embedded Linux, VxWorks, or other embedded O/S; Experience with FPGA’s and board layout
  • Proficiency with C and C++, Python, Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience with signal processing, analog and digital filters
  • Rapid prototyping experience, Aircraft homebuilding experience and/or pilot’s license
  • DOD Secret Clearance

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Requires mobility and the ability to bend and reach

  • May be asked to carry up to 20 lbs. up and down a flight of stairs on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc. 
  • Occasional reaching overhead and lifting up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to converse and communicate information with others
  • Occasional exposure to chemical vapors and/or fumes in low non-hazardous concentration
  • Potential to climb up and down steps on a daily basis
  • Must be able to read and understand SDS
