Job Description and Qualifications
The Baler Operator maintains and operates baling equipment to bind trimmings and paper waste received from the Press equipment. The Baler Operator must efficiently collect, segregate, shred, bale, store and load all scrap materials. This position reports to the Shipping Manager.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, on-site position. Specific shift hours will be agreed upon at hiring, however, changes in manufacturing needs and schedules may necessitate a change to the original agreed-upon hours, or the working of additional, overtime hours. Every effort will be made to give advance notice of any permanent changes.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand the functions of the baler and react using troubleshooting skills to keep downtime at a minimum.
- Understand and work within the requirements and regulations for the running and handling of the equipment.
- Follow required reporting procedures and hazardous waste operating procedures, in order to meet all environmental compliance objectives and requirements.
- Inspect equipment as directed. Troubleshoot equipment issues as they occur, then coordinate and assist maintenance personnel in completing the necessary repairs.
- Prepare daily inventory; maintain records of weights of bales produced, tagging each bale recording weight and grade on the tag.
- Segregate and store the various classifications of by-products materials to assure there are no mixes in any bales or shipments of other materials such as metals.
- Operate hoist equipment to move material into position for shredding, and to remove bales from balers, over scales, and to storage.
- Accurately weigh bales or other by-product material.
- Loads scrap using hoist truck or by hand into specified railcars and/or trucks, preparing proper manifest.
- Feed and operate baler machine, maintaining segregation of grades, using dumper, shaker and conveyor as suitable.
- Operate a computer and perform necessary paperwork.
- Communicate daily shift status and maintenance issues to coworkers and to the warehouse manager.
- Make small deliveries and pickups in company vehicles.
- Requires loading trucks with bales, finished goods, paper rolls, and transporting them to the warehouse.
- Maintain quality and efficiencies.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Forklift experience preferred.
- Paperboard folding carton industry experience.
- Experience in shipping and operating manufacturing equipment is a plus.
- Flexible, adaptable, and teamwork-oriented. Able to perform a variety of tasks throughout the day in a fast-paced work environment; respond to continually changing priorities and coordinate multiple projects.
- Language Skills – Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Computer Skills – Basic computer skills are required to read work instructions, record job data, follow work schedules, and communicate via email.
