Overview
Ballast installation Mechanics are required to install lead ballast in the form of ingots, shapes, and shims to support submarine construction. This work requires a talented crafts-person with an aptitude to learn and the ability to visualize a job from start to finish. The mechanics will receive job specific training and will receive qualification to perform the process after a demonstration of ability.
Work includes cutting and fitting rubber cladding using carpentry tools, sheers, band saws. And various pneumatic tools such as grinders and sanders. Applicants will be required to read and interpret plans and shipyard procedures. This position requires sound dampening and painting.

This position is located at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI location.
Qualifications
Required:
- A minimum of 1 year related experience or a minimum of 1 year of shipyard experience
- Basic mathematical skills
- Ability to interpret shipyard procedures, drawings, technical manuals, test documents and diagrams
- Individuals are required to possess their own basic hand tools
- Must be available to work all shifts
- Ability to work at heights, confined spaces and extreme temperature conditions as required
- Ability to qualify for paint and sound dampening
- Required to lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred:
- High school diploma/GED; Additional preference given for Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
- Previous experience in carpentry, auto body
- Applicants currently possessing shielding qualifications
- Previous experience working in the construction industry or a manufacturing environment
- Military/Navy experience
