As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will develop and demonstrate the next generation materials and manufacturing technologies for a wide range of space applications, including reusable rockets, orbital habitats and ground support systems. Designing and analyzing composite structures are critical skills for fast-paced composite material and manufacturing technology development.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze rapid prototype designs in support of new Composite Materials and Manufacturing technology development for cost reduction, improved re-usability, and performance
  • Design optimization and validation through finite element analysis or classical hand analysis
  • Develop advanced composite materials, determine material properties and design allowables
  • Define and optimize composite layups, develop and validate finite element models of composite structures
  • Analyze and size composite structures for strength, stiffness, fatigue, damage tolerance
  • Perform requirements analysis and define SOW with customers, key stake holders and suppliers
  • Develop and execute test plans and support lab testing
  • Review and interpret test data to facilitate rapid design iterations
  • Maintain project schedule and report status
  • Coordinate with procurement and suppliers/partners/vendors to ensure projects are executed properly
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with Blue Origin policies and procedures
  • Review and approve technical reports from internal and external suppliers
  • Write technical proposals
  • Facilitate technology transition from research and development to production


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 6 years of composite structural analysis experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle structures
  • Structural analysis experience on recently developed aircraft or launch vehicles
  • Strong background in composite structural analysis using industrial accepted failure criteria, e.g., Angle minus Longitudinal/Load or ply based allowables
  • Experience with linear & non-linear statics, buckling, stability, fatigue, and linear dynamic analysis of composites
  • Experience with thermal analysis of composites
  • Experience with developing, writing and updating test procedures
  • Knowledge of fabrication and integration processes, systems engineering and quality control practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work optimally both independently and as part of our interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Fibersim, Simulia, Abaqus, Optistruct, LS/Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer
  • Mechanical design and integration skills using CATIA V5 and the CATIA composite software workbenches
  • Experience with Creo (Pro/E) Wildfire 5 or greater, Composite module in Creo, Windchill 10
  • Experience with composite manufacturing (AFP, ATL, Compression molding, Thermal forming/stamp forming)
  • Demonstrated experience developing manufacturing processes for transition to production
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control
  • Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and developing the design to produce world-class engineered products
