Maxar’s Next Generations Systems group is looking for a Constellation Communications Architect to propel the timely access and/or delivery of mission-relevant Earth Intelligence to our global customer base.

This senior technical leadership role, that will provide cross-functional leadership in designing integration strategies for emergent communications technologies into Maxar’s architecture, in a durable and malleable framework that accounts for security, resiliency and scalability in meeting Maxar’s evolving business needs. This role can be worked as a remote position or hybrid roleout of our Westminster, CO office.

In this role you will collaborate with senior architects and engineers from the ground segment, space segment and network team to define and realize the next generation constellation communication architecture.

The Constellation Communication Architects’ role is to:

  • Collaborate with technical leaders and SME’s across Maxar to develop our next generation constellation communications architecture. This architecture will encompass the entire 7 layer OSI model including: RF and optical physical links, satellite RF, optical and other payloads, advanced data routing decisions along with macro system data flows.

  • Characterizes communications use cases and data flows and maps them to existing business uses cases. These use cases will guide how you integrate new technologies and business models, accounting for emerging trends in terrestrial networks, ground to space communication systems, and space to ground transport layers.

  • Facilitates end-to end architecture decisions across multi-disciplinary teams and champions cross functional team communication. Success is building alignment to a collaboratively developed architecture, that is well socialized and kept current with evolving demands.

  • Identifies critical technology gaps in the current architecture and collaborates with teams to define successful solutions.

  • Interfaces with and builds relationships with 3rd party partners including, ground system service providers, space based and terrestrial network providers, and cloud services providers to understand current capabilities, and technical roadmaps. This includes engineering specs and roadmaps that will be shared across Maxar’s engineering teams.

  • Understand the evolving characteristics of Maxar’s product portfolio and integrate emerging demands into the Constellation Communications Architecture.

  • Identify and characterize industry and technology disruptors and determine impact to the constellation communications architecture.

  • Performs collaborative trade studies and feasibility assessments for selecting specific technologies or design patterns to be included in the Constellation Communication Architecture.

  • Communicates and interfaces with Maxar executives and capital investment process on critical investments needed to ensure success of the constellation communications architecture, including developing business cases and championing support for investment.

  • Builds ties to industry standards groups and committees to evolve or create new standards for gaps in existing communication protocols

The minimum qualifications for you to be successful in this role:

  • You must be a US Citizen.

  • You must be willing to become cleared to the TS/SCI level if asked to do so.

  • A degree in computer science, engineering, math, physics, or equivalent demonstrated engineering skills and experience.

  • You have at least 15 years' relevant technical experience in one or more areas:

    • Experience with technology integration into architecture and road maps

    • Experience designing complex networking systems and/or have industry network certifications

    • Experience with satellite RF communication engineering and practical field experience

  • Your experience includes satellite systems architecture, with an emphasis on low earth orbit design/communications patterns.

These qualifications are strongly preferred:

  • You are a seasoned architect and can apply industry standard tools to the solutions and artifacts essential to successfully building, communicating, and adopting an architecture.

  • You are an excellent communicator and influential leader . You will collaborate with SME’s across the organization to build consensus and a target architecture that is accessible and well understood across our multi-disciplinary teams.

  • You love to solve problems and can work independently. Having built consensus in the past, you have excellent organizational agility and understand when and where you need to communicate to move alignment forward.

  • You have strong analytical skills and ability to quickly learn about new technologies and can integrate them into architectures and roadmaps.

  • You understand disruptive technologies and trends and maintain awareness across multiple industries to identify them. You can elucidate the impacts they may have on the current architecture or business model. At the same time, you appreciate the ambiguity of the possible outcomes and can apply probabilistic thinking to the likelihood of specific developments.

  • You can identify critical investments and develop a business case that you explain and advocate for with Maxar’s executives.

Any of these additional qualifications make you an excellent candidate for this role:

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance

  • Broad understanding of space systems and the interface/relationships between satellites and the other components of a space mission architecture

  • 5+ years of satellite communications and RF design experience

  • Experience designing RFC compliant communication stacks and embedded system design

  • Experience containerizing communications systems

  • Demonstrated history of designing satellites communications systems including RF and optical links

  • Previous experience developing mission architectures and satellite constellations

  • Experience working on geospatial intelligence systems or image processing

  • Knowledgeable of space regulatory compliance, security compliance and export requirements and their effect on system design

  • Knowledge of multi-orbit satellite architectures and non-satellite-based communication technologies such as cellular, terrestrial microwave, optical systems, Bluetooth, WIFI or 5G

The Compensation range for this position in Colorado is $131,000 to $219,000 annually and is dependent on location, skills, and experience.
