Job Description
The candidate for this long term assignment (10/31/2023 or longer) will support projects throughout the Los Alamos Nuclear Lab to ensure safe, efficient and cost-effective delivery of work. The Mechanical Field Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction projects are in full conformance with approved construction documents and contractual requirements. The Mechanical Field Engineer will perform routine construction engineering assignments that requires a full working knowledge of construction engineering practices and exercise professional judgment within the framework of established guidelines. The selected candidate(s) must understand and be committed to the Laboratory's safety culture, continuous improvement process and leadership principles for its expanding portfolio.

· Responsible for worker safety on the project enforcing a Zero Accidents philosophy
· Prepares equipment and parts checklists and other project documents
· Prepare or oversees preparation of field material purchase requisitions, including estimating the quantities and material takeoffs of the field purchases of materials and compliance with design specifications and drawings
· Reviews Work Packages and Work Instructions for completeness
· Reviews project design and engineering documents to ensure their completeness and constructability
· Provides guidance on design engineering drawings and prepares construction field sketches
· Assists construction supervision in planning construction methods and procedures
· Field verifies construction materials for compliance and storage requirements
· Provides quality oversight of installers on periodic basis
· Prepares Field Change Requests and liaisons with other Engineering Services personnel to resolve technical issues in the field
· Inspects construction work for compliance with drawings, specifications and national codes and standards
· Prepares and maintains records of quantities and construction inspection work, and may prepare material and installation portions of subcontract bid packages
· Prepares daily progress reports and keeps supervisors informed on progress of assigned tasks
· Assists with review and coordination of RFI responses
· Assist/Perform Turnover to Start-up
· Assists in tracking of project deliverables, including quality deficiencies
· Assists the Senior Construction and Design Engineers, including witness testing, interpretation of design drawings and specifications, and closeout requirements
· Mentors Junior Construction Engineers in their functions and tasks
Basic Job Requirements
• Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in engineering field of study and twelve (12) years of work-related experience; a recognized certification or registration in the applicable field, if required; some locations may have additional or different qualifications in order to comply with local requirements
• Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors
• Job related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job
• Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
• Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
Preferred Qualifications
· Advanced knowledge of engineering and construction techniques, applications of engineering and construction methods, and application of technology and tools to conventional facility operation and construction operations
· Advanced knowledge of construction work planning and control methods
· Advanced knowledge of facility maintenance and installation techniques
· Advanced understanding of relevant laboratory procedure, standards, and guides
· Expert knowledge and practical application of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline
· Advanced knowledge of construction principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices
Other Job Requirements
• Participate in Fluor University
• Assess and escalate issues to the Construction Engineering Manager, as necessary
