Job Summary

The Senior Manager (Safety and Industrial Hygiene) will be a critical member of the BMS Lawrenceville Site EOHSS Department Safety and IH team. This team act as SMEs (subject matter experts) for all safety matters for the site and support general site EOHSS matters when they arise. The Senior Manager (Safety and Industrial Hygiene) will work under the Director to coordinate, implement, assess, and improve safety outcomes for the site. The Senior Manager (Safety and Industrial Hygiene) will be knowledgeable with local regulations and consensus guides and become knowledgeable with BMS management systems, policies and procedures, to promote compliant, forward-leaning safety culture and preserve BMS’ reputation while driving shared Company objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Safety and Industrial Hygiene issues at the site

  • Identifies and manages safety risk at the site

  • Supports the Director in communicating safety direction, outcomes, opportunities and metrics

  • Prioritizes (for self, team and/or site) with appropriate urgency

  • Provides support for broader EOHSS programs when needed

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety/industrial hygiene laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides.

  • Manage Occupational Health and Safety programs, trainings, and initiatives as required.

  • Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Biosafety Officer.

  • Coordinate Asbestos Management Program; maintain appropriate certifications for asbestos inspections and management activities.

  • Knowledgeable in sampling for indoor air contaminants, noise, and laboratory fume hood exhaust ventilation.

  • Manage and maintain EHS recordkeeping systems to track incidents, training and corrective actions.

  • Participate in the Site emergency response team and respond to employee health and safety concerns.

  • Develop, implement and monitor EHS programs to ensure compliance with new and changing regulations, EOHSS Standards and SOPs.

  • Develop collaborative relationships with scientists, lab and facility staff to integrate EHS programs into daily activities.

  • Accountable along with the Director for site safety regulatory preparedness and builds rapport and trust through all regulatory authority interactions.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of site safety culture.

  • Stops operations and activities that could harm the environment, workforce, or facilities.

  • Participates in site design reviews, change control, technical transfer, shutdown and pre-start up safety reviews, as required.

  • Leads the management of the Site FSAP (Facility Self-Assessment Program) to ensure EHS Audit readiness, including assigning FSAPs to SME, verifying completion of CAPAs to ensure compliance with EOHSS Standards.

  • Supports the site EOHSS team, to partner with engineering and R&ED Departments to ensure rigorous implementation of global EOHSS engineering requirements.

  • Contributes to site EOHSS Committees from a safety perspective, and site self-assessment program evaluations.

  • Contributes to identifying opportunities to eliminate unplanned events including spills, workplace injuries/accidents (as a SME), and adverse health effects.

  • Supports the site EOHSS team for EOHSS-related incident investigations using approved tools and techniques and leads investigations.

  • Conducts proactive safety regulatory surveillance; updates strategy, systems and programs resulting from such evaluations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have the education and experience to serve as a Chemical Hygiene Officer and Biosafety Officer.

  • Expertise and knowledge of current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.

  • Must be completely facile in all safety programs.

  • Must have sufficient knowledge and experience with high hazard programs and permit execution.

  • Must have the ability to maintain proficiency in all BMS EOHSS standards.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing site safety programs and leading others through change.

  • Ability to attend to multiple high-priority issues simultaneously with calm.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; communicates orally with clarity and command.

  • Proclivity for partnership and cross-team collaboration; coordinates between site and above-site entities.

  • Escalates issues with urgency to facilitate ease of resolution.

  • Strong leadership skills and previous management experience is a plus.

  • Detailed proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint; aptitude and ability to learn EOHSS specific systems such as ENABLON, Enfos, Enhesa.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Environment Sciences, engineering, or equivalent. Advanced degree with safety focus preferred.

  • Board certification in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Chemical Safety is required – CIH is preferred.

  • At least 5-10 years of safety experience in an industrial environment required.
