Equipment Operator
Location - Derwood, MD

Located at the Montgomery County Transfer Station in Derwood MD, we seek a dedicated Equipment Operator who will be responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment (front-end loader, excavator, forklift, sweeper, etc.) used to receive, stockpile, process, prepare for transport and load municipal solid waste into transfer trailers, or other similar vehicles. The individual fulfilling this role must be flexible to work shifts as assigned, handle special projects assigned by a supervisor and any other related duties. The duties herein are intended to describe the general nature of the work performed by this position and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties and skills.
Responsibilities include:
Operate various pieces of equipment and machinery to facilitate the receipt, stockpile, process and load municipal solid waste into transfer trailers.
Maintain effective equipment checks (pre and post operations)
Perform equipment maintenance and repairs as instructed by maintenance department and transfer station supervisory personnel.
Maintain various items at the transfer station for continual operation i.e., sprinkler system, radiation monitors, alarm system heating and cooling system etc.
Obtain information regarding material entering transfer station by greeting customers, visually confirming contents are appropriate for the transfer station.
Provide instructions to customer for proper location of disposal on tipping floor
Perform inspections effectively and accurately in accordance with state mandated Waste Ban Regulations.
Ensure that customers and employees conduct all business in a safe manner and wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Perform facility inspection checks as assigned by a Supervisor.
Follow and enforce all required Covanta safety policies and procedures.
Position Requirements:
To be considered for this position, the individual must have:
Minimum of one (1) year of prior experience working at sites regulated by OSHA, preferably in a solid waste handling facility
High School diploma or equivalent; mechanical, equipment or trade school certificate or training preferred.
Must have prior experience operating heavy equipment including, but not limited to forklifts, excavators, front-end loaders, and sweepers.
A valid driver’s license and any applicable regulatory licensing is required.
Must be flexible to work rotatingt shifts
