Intern: Lifelong Learning with Provable Guarantees in Adversarial Environments

SRI International

Remote, CA

SRI’s Information & Computing Sciences Division is taking on some of the world’s most important challenges, creating leading-edge technology solutions that have revolutionary impact.   Our researchers are redefining the way human beings interact with machines and with one another through machines, as we define what’s next in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computing for the real world.

The Center for Vision Technologies (CVT) develops and applies its algorithms and hardware to be able to see better with computational sensing, understand the scene using 2D/3D reasoning, understand and interact with humans using interactive intelligent systems, support teamwork through collaborative autonomy, mine big data with multi-modal data analytics and continuously learn through machine learning.

CVT Vision Systems Lab is searching for an intern to work with their team on a Lifelong Learning program.  The goal of this program is to develop novel algorithms for lifelong supervised learning that can be applied over a range of sensor modalities, environmental characteristics, and applications. Specifically, we aim to develop algorithms that are computationally-efficient and have provable guarantees with respect to performance under various noise distributions.

The intern will have the option to work fully remote or work a hybrid schedule from our Princeton, NJ office.

The intern will help formulate the algorithms and derive their theoretical guarantees, construct a test environment for applications-of-interest, and formulate and run experiments for empirical evaluation.

  • Masters or PhD student in CS, Mathematics, EE, Data Science, or related technical field
  • Strong mathematical background
  • Strong programming background
  • Strong machine learning background

Desired skills:

  • Experience with lifelong learning and/or machine learning for streaming data
  • Experience with machine learning theory
  • Experience with (adversarially-) robust machine learning
  • Experience with computer vision and/or applying machine learning to other sensor modalities
  • Experience with PyTorch

The salary range is: $30-$45/hr. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles. Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
