Position Summary:

The Able-Bodied Seamen assist with the operation of deck and cargo machinery and perform the duties of helmsman, lookout when at sea, and duties relating to navigational watch standing assigned by the OICNW. When transferring cargo, the Able-Bodied Seamen assist the Deck Officer with standing a cargo watch. The Able-Bodied Seamen report directly to the Chief Mate for cargo, maintenance, and safety related duties, and the OICNW for navigational duties.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Chief Mate with the inspection, testing and maintenance of deck and cargo machinery and systems as well as all firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment onboard
  • Participate in all required Fire, Emergency, Abandon ship and safety/security Training Drills and exercises
  • Perform duties as directed by the Master and Deck Officers safely and efficiently
  • Obtain working knowledge of the Safety Management System and comply with all procedures outlined within as relating to the position
  • Accurately report and record maintenance related activities as requested by an Officer.
  • Maintain a fixed daily work rotation as per STCW Work Rest guidelines
  • Day for Day Rotation work schedule (avg. 45 day on/45 day off rotation)

Requirements/Qualifications: (Attach copies of the below credentials on your application)

  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages:
  • International STCW Endorsements: Able Seafarer-Deck (STCW II/5), RFPNW (STCW II/4), STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW VI/1), PSC (STCW VI/2), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6)
  • National Endorsements: Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited, Lifeboatman, Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Steward’s Department (F.H.)
  • Tankerman Assistant limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) Cargoes PIC endorsement is preferred
  • Must have current USCG/STCW medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
  • Must have a valid TWIC card and Passport
