Job Description
Materials Engineering Technology (MET) is looking for a materials engineer to work with a collaborative, upbeat team supporting Air Products’ materials needs in all of our global businesses. This is a hybrid role based at Global HQ in Allentown, PA, and in-person lab work will be required. This role will directly support Air Products’ carbon bring together and green hydrogen plants, among others, through a combination of materials selection, failure analysis, and material performance research. This junior technical role will receive support and mentoring from more senior engineers in the US and China for both technical and professional development. As part of the Chief Engineer’s Office, MET performs risk assessment for the company and interacts with high level directors and managers to assess, communicate, and document risk, in addition to materials selection, failure analysis, and lifetime prediction work. We need someone who is able to start immediately.

Job Duties

  • Failure analysis—lab work and communication of results to stakeholders

  • Plant support by answering questions about materials compatibility, repair or replace decisions, and inspections

  • Materials selection for new plants and retrofits

  • Identifying gaps in materials performance and addressing through internal or external research

  • Working with external organizations such as AMPP (NACE), API, MTI, CGA, and ASTM to provide input on industry standards and keep up with industry developments and trends

  • 10% travel, including plant visits, conference travel, and/or supplier visits

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in metallurgy, materials engineering, or related field

  • Up to 5 years experience outside of school doing failure analysis and/or materials selection in the chemical process industries and/or energy industry

  • Experience executing materials performance testing and/or research projects

  • Experience with weld microstructure-performance relationship analysis is preferred

Desired but not required:

  • Experience with cryogenic materials performance and testing

  • Experience with machinery
