Mechanical Engineering – Stress Analyst Staff

Lockheed Martin

Lone Tree, CO

Job Description
The space domain is essential to modern commerce, scientific discovery, and national defense. Maintaining space domain awareness in cislunar space – the volume of space between the Earth and the Moon – will require a leap-ahead in propulsion technology.

The goal of the program is to demonstrate a nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) system on orbit. NTP uses a nuclear reactor to heat propellant to extreme temperatures before expelling the hot propellant through a nozzle to produce thrust. Compared to conventional space propulsion technologies, NTP offers a high thrust-to-weight ratio around 10,000 times greater than electric propulsion and two-to-five times greater specific impulse (i.e. propellant efficiency) than chemical propulsion.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Generating stress analysis technical memorandums and reports to support data packages, peer reviews, and external customer reviews
• Preparing technical charts and represent the organization in design reviews and outside contracts
• Supporting static structural test definition, requirements, monitoring, data reduction, and comparison to analysis while understanding and incorporating other applicable mechanical (thermal, dynamic, materials, etc…) and system level requirements/parameters into the stress analyses
• Supporting development of weight-optimized, compliant flightworthy components and structural assemblies which satisfy the contractual design criteria as well as any producibility requirements defined by Manufacturing and Quality Engineering
Basic Qualifications
• Ability to apply new and advanced analytical techniques necessary to perform structural analysis
• Knowledge of structural characteristics and the ability to generate free body diagrams detailing load paths through complex systems
• Knowledge of and applicable experience with spacecraft or aircraft structural analysis methods, including classical hand calculations and experience with mechanical joints
Desired skills
• A Master's degree is strongly preferred for this position
• Ability to work in a collaborative and highly integrated team environment
• Ability and desire to assume ownership of tasks and drive to closure quickly and efficiently
• Non-linear, fracture& fatigue, and buckling analysis experience
• Mechanisms, antenna, electronic component, ground support, hoisting, and test support equipment, and composite materials analysis experience
• Experience with Abaqus, Matlab, Mathcad and CREO
• Static, vibration, acoustic, modal, shock test experience of aerospace flight hardware
• Academic coursework in advanced mechanics of materials
