Summary of position:

The Payroll/Accounting Analyst supports Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC) and its subsidiary Spreckels Sugar Company, Inc. (SSCI) by processing and recording bi-weekly payroll. This role helps SMBSC and SSCI reach its mission by administering payroll functions related to pay, deductions, and documentation, performing general ledger duties related to cash, intercompany accounting, and month end, as well as working on special projects to benefit the Company.

 Essential Functions:

§  Enters payroll information into Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG), which includes: computing deductions from income, income tax and benefit withholdings, child support and garnishment orders, 401K information, deferred compensation plan, union dues/fees, miscellaneous payroll deductions, business expense reimbursements, managing direct deposit and pay card account information as needed; adjustments as necessary.

§  Processes and issues SMBSC and SSCI bi-weekly payroll, verifying tax and pay information, uploading 401k, HSA, deferred compensation information and garnishment processing.

§  Reviews and reclassifies business expenses processed with payroll.

§  Process and issue last pay checks resulting from layoffs and terminations.

§  Validate and review quarterly/annual information to be processed by UKG.

§  Assists employees with payroll questions and requests.

§  Coordinates year-end mailings to employees.

§  Enters daily cash activity transactions into the general ledger.

§  Manages accounts receivable including creating and mailing invoices, recording payments, reconciling and recording the month end journal entry.

§  Participates in month end close including intercompany activity and recording intercompany charges, creating journal entries, and account reconciliations.

§  Process purchase order receipts.

  • Records and reconciles raw material inventory and usage.

 

Core Competencies and Skill Requirements:

§  Strong understanding of accounting principles

o   Knowledge of applicable accounts payable/general ledger systems and procedures, financial chart accounts, regulatory standards and compliance as well as corporate procedures.

o   Knowledge of payroll practices and standard labor laws, including familiarity with payroll deductions and withholdings Minnesota and California.

o   Ability to perform mathematical computations such as percentages, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

§  Demonstrated critical thinking skills

o   Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

§  Excellent written and oral communication skills

o   Ability to demonstrate superior interpersonal skills needed for working with a variety of knowledge levels including employees, which includes answering questions and distributing information.

o   Be very detail oriented.

§  Proficient in Microsoft Office

o   Ability to operate accounting and spreadsheet programs.

o   Ability to create formulas, pivot tables, and graphs using Microsoft Excel.

§  Strong work ethic

o   Ability to manage multiple priorities, produce excellent work results and follow through on commitments.

o   Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

o   Ability to work overtime as required.

§  Commitment to safety by working in a responsible, safe manner by adhering to SMBSC’s safety protocol.

Required Education and Experience:

            §  Associate’s degree in accounting; Bachelor’s degree preferred

§  Two to three years payroll experience

§  Ultimate Kronos Group and Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains experience a plus
