Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks applicants for a 9-month tenured with the Associate or Professor rank. The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous and collaborative program addressing issues related to global food security and animal science and to integrate into the College of Agriculture and Life Science’s global outreach program. As the holder of the Rothschild Endowed Professorship in Global Food Security and Animal Science, the candidate is expected to provide leadership around international animal science and will have access to annual funds from the endowment that may be applied to their research program. The candidate’s program should include extramurally funded research pertaining to global food security with special emphasis on low-income countries. It is expected that the successful candidate’s program in global food security will initially use or develop technologies associated with one or more of the following: quantitative genetics, molecular genetics/genomics, sustainability, precision livestock farming, and/or data analytics. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate in existing research programs in animal science and in related disciplines such as agricultural and biosystems engineering, economics, sociology, nutrition, stress physiology, animal health, precision livestock farming, and data analytics. Involvement in inter-departmental programs across the university is encouraged. Teaching responsibilities may include an undergraduate course in food security issues and/or graduate and undergraduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Directing graduate student research at M.S. and Ph.D. levels and undergraduate student academic advising is expected. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the livestock animal industries.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics, animal science, or a closely related discipline. Further, candidates must meet the qualifications for tenure at ISU. Candidates will be considered for associate professor or professor rank based on previous experience relative to the ISU policies for tenured faculty.
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Demonstrated interests and/or experience in international programming.
(2) Experience working on global food security issues.
(3) A record of scholarly output in Animal Breeding/Genetics.
(4) The ability to engage, support and work with a diverse array of students, academic staff, industry stakeholders, and the global public.
(5) A record of attracting extramural funding.

To best serve our students and provide research and engagement with a global perspective, an endowed professorship in global food security in the Department of Animal Science in honor of Distinguished Professor Emeritus Max Rothschild has been established. The holder of the Rothschild Endowed Professorship will be not only a champion for the animal science program but also an animal science scholar or industry professional with an interest in low-income countries who will train students in the skills and methods needed to be successful in professional practice. The successful candidate is expected to support growing student enrollment, firmly anchor and train students to meet the changing needs of a hungry world, and continue educating students in animal science with a focus on food security issues and the importance of animal-source protein in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
