Job Description
The Oncology Research department at Gilead Sciences is seeking an exceptional and highly motivated Sr. Director to oversee a research group focused on development of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other methods of directed tumor killing for the treatment of cancers with high unmet medical need. The successful candidate will provide scientific and technical expertise in efforts to elucidate the mechanism of action (MOA) of ADCs and other large molecule therapeutics and to generate the rationale for novel therapeutic combinations that induce tumor killing and result in durable anti-tumor responses, aiming to guide therapeutic combinations in clinical oncology settings. The candidate will lead internal projects and external collaborations to identify and deliver drug candidates that warrant clinical evaluation and will support Gilead’s Business Development team in evaluating external partnership opportunities. Key Responsibilities
Oversee a portfolio of discovery and peri-IND research programs to advance novel oncology therapeutics towards the clinic, emphasizing ADCs and other large molecule targeted therapies capable of mediating tumor cell killing.
Manage a highly productive team of Research Associates and Scientists to initiate and advance pre-clinical programs. Train and mentor junior scientists.
Provide leadership to and collaboration with multi-disciplinary project teams to discover and develop large molecule targeted therapies and understand combination potential. Proactively identify project risks and effectively communicate to project teams and leadership.
Manage multiple programs simultaneously and work cross-functionally with colleagues in oncology, protein engineering, chemistry, safety/toxicology, clinical development and other functions to advance programs. Ensure timely delivery of biology data to support key decision-making.
Think critically and creatively, emphasize rapid data-driven decision-making that balances risk-taking with rigorous go/no-go experiments to prosecute and promote a differentiated pre-clinical pipeline.
Contribute expertise to multi-disciplinary externally facing teams to evaluate and recommend partnerships and acquisitions
Lead joint internal/external teams to discover novel therapeutics, understand mode of action and therapeutic potential of novel drug candidates
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
PhD degree with post-doctoral research experience and 10+ years of experience in immunology, cancer biology, and/or cell biology with previous experience in drug discovery and MOA studies
Extensive knowledge base in antibody-drug conjugate development, with preferred experience in immunology and/or cancer immunotherapy, and a strong track record of past achievements
Ability to challenge the status-quo and propose highly innovative approaches to key questions in the field
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to summarize complex scientific questions and biological processes for non-experts
Ability to identify and communicate key issues, bottlenecks, and risks that could impact the business while facilitating solutions and mitigations
Proven managerial excellence and ability to motivate highly skilled team members from diverse backgrounds
