The Ultra Assurance function is responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and fulfilment of Ultra's Quality Policy, which is to comply fully in the conduct of the Company's business with all applicable regulatory and customer required specifications, and to maintain an effective Quality Management System, working in partnership with the Operations and Engineering teams to ensure that products and processes conform to applicable standards and specifications, and the incidence and costs of quality non-conformances are constantly monitored and improved, while maintaining the highest practicable standards of manufacturing productivity and efficiency.

Job Description

The Staff Software Quality Assurance Engineer position’s primary role is to monitor software development activities at Ultra and promote & facilitate software development process compliance. They will also facilitate continuous process improvement, by participating in software group meetings and reviews, and providing guidance to the software group, as well as feedback to management of needed process changes, or Ultra approach changes. They will run the Ultra System Verification Lab (VLAB), and facilitate good relationships with Crane, DCMA, and other customers. They will participate failure analysis activities and help lead activities such as Root Cause and Corrective Action Analysis and will work closely with management, engineers, and the quality team to promote not only Ultra process adherence, but overall corporate success at all levels.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Software Quality Engineering Responsibilities

  • Ensures all software development activities comply to established procedures.

  • Participates in software reviews of code, design artifacts (e.g., SDD), SWDP gate reviews, etc.

  • Attends software group meetings and participates in discussions/decisions.

  • Maintains and publishes monthly Ultra Software Development process adherence metrics.

  • Helps with strategic project design tasks when time permits (e.g. small SW coding task, RVTM creation)

  • Reviews and approves all production Test Station software update or new station requests, & EN-FN’s.

  • Reviews and approves Sonobuoy Test Spec or software related ECN’s, and attends appropriate CCB’s

  • System Verification Lab

  • a) Maintains VLAB. Help decide direction of VLAB equipment & software capabilities. Work with software functional lead to better support company goals.

  • b) Runs System Verification Lab (VLAB). Responsible for lab test capabilities, and SW & HW updates, including new test suite creation using tools such as JAVA, HT-BASIC.

  • Is responsible for maintaining the production Test Station test data database called SigmaSure, providing admin support, and user training. Helps monitor SigmaSure data for proactive issue identification, and yield issues. Helps further utilize/develop SigmaSure’s capabilities such as trend analysis, problem prediction, and daily dashboard creation & enhancement.

  • Helps with test planning including creation of plans & reports, especially for VLAB testing & Test Station software updates (Test Plans for latter).

  • Monitors ECP activities and is responsible for VLAB support of those activities.

  • Works with customer (e.g. DCMA) to plan, schedule, host, execute, and report on test events.

  • Works closely with program management, software development engineers and customer representatives.

  • Helps create and maintain SQA related quality documents & processes.

  • Provides guidance and training of project teams for quality issues and training on quality tools and how to utilize them.

  • Reports to management on quality issues & trends.

  • Assists with compiling, writing and delivering training material on quality standards and activities.

2. Continuous Improvement Activities

  • Support Failure Analysis process and tools across the organization.

  • Assists with any failure analysis effort/teams as requested.

  • Suggest or make improvement to internal process to improve quality by participating in process groups when requested (e.g. generating pre-tailored examples of processes and/or templets for project type/size)

  • Participate in critical Continuous improvement activities as requested by Engineering Quality Assurance Manager


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain a US Government security clearance. Security clearances are granted to U.S. citizens.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Systems Engineering with 10+ years of experience within Quality.

  • Must have AS9100, DOD, and MIL-STD experience (2+ years)

  • Occasional business travel may be required

Desired Skills:

  • Masters Degree is a plus

  • CMMI/ Continuous Improvement experience is a plus

  • Knowledgeable and experienced with formal software development processes and design artifacts (e.g. SDP, SDD, RTVM, Customer Requirements Specifications, etc.)

  • Knowledgeable and experienced with production environment and artifacts (e.g. Test Specifications, Product and/or Test Station update procedures, etc)

  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Must have good understanding or training in root cause analysis (e.g. 8D Methodology)

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Willingness to take a tough stance when required to support company quality goals and objectives
